Naval Weapons Station Charleston: Housing & Commutes

The Weapons Station sits on the Goose Creek side of Joint Base Charleston, and the neighborhoods that work for it are different from the Air Base. Here is who is stationed there, where families live, and a drive-time tool measured to this side of the base.

About the Weapons Station

Located in Goose Creek and Hanahan in Berkeley County, the Weapons Station is one of the Lowcountry's largest military footprints.

Naval Nuclear Power Training Command

One of the Navy's marquee schools, training sailors and officers as nuclear power operators. A constant flow of students and instructors.

Naval Support Activity Charleston

Base operations and tenant-command support across the installation.

Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic

A major engineering and IT command (formerly SPAWAR) with a large civilian and contractor workforce.

Weapons & submarine logistics

The station's original mission: ordnance and submarine support, a major Navy presence on the East Coast.

Heads up: the Weapons Station and the Air Base are about 20 to 30 minutes apart. If your orders are to this side, prioritize Goose Creek and Hanahan, the drive-time tool below is measured to the Weapons Station, not the Air Base.

Best neighborhoods for the Weapons Station

Goose Creek

The closest community to the base, deeply military-friendly, with strong inventory at BAH-friendly prices.

Hanahan

Central and convenient, established and newer neighborhoods, easy access to both sides of JB Charleston.

Moncks Corner

More land and house for the money just north, with a quick run down Highway 52 to the station.

Summerville, Nexton & Cane Bay

Newer master-planned living and amenities, a longer but very doable commute.

Ladson

Affordable and central between Summerville and the base, popular with first-time military buyers.

Daniel Island

A lifestyle upgrade with top schools and walkability, higher prices and a slightly longer drive.

Schools

Most Weapons Station families fall in Berkeley County School District (Goose Creek, Hanahan, Moncks Corner, Nexton), with parts of Summerville in Dorchester District Two and Daniel Island in Charleston County. Assignment is by address and can change, so verify the exact school zone for any specific home before you commit.

Free help: the Joint Base Charleston School Liaison Officer supports Weapons Station families too. Listed contact is 843-963-4088 (verify the current number and hours).

BAH & buying

Goose Creek and Hanahan tend to offer some of the best value-per-BAH-dollar in the metro, which is part of why so many sailors buy here. A VA loan keeps your cash in your pocket: no down payment, no PMI.

Run the numbers with the Charleston BAH calculator, read the 2026 VA loan guide, and compare both sides of the base in the Joint Base Charleston guide.
